TE CUENTO
20 years ago, I got to know and collaborated with Dona Eva’s food kitchen in the shanty town number 20 in Lugano. They provide meals on a daily basis to over 100 families. Speaking with Sandra, Dona Eva’s daughter who manages the food kitchen, she mentioned that she was extremely worried that the children in the neighborhood were hardly doing anything for school. As they don’t have computers or Ipads, only WhatsApp on their phones, there is very little they can do.
The Food Kitchen operates a Story Workshop that the mother of a friend started. Since 2001, Angela has been reading to children between 2 and 10 years old every Wednesday for 2 hours. Sandra told me, “20 years later, I can only tell you that of all the workshops that we give, the only one that I can measure the results from is the Story Workshop. Of the 100 families, the children that consistently finish school and become professionals or have stable jobs are those that passed through the Workshop.
So we came up with the idea to begin to read and tell stories. We recorded them on an audio from WhatsApp and we forwarded them to parents and children. Sandra is extremely adept at obtaining commitment from the community in which she works, so that the children pay attention, and are active. She sends the recorded readings to the community and asks that the children return to her a drawing of the part of the story that they most enjoyed. We started a pilot project with the story “The Mysterious Watering Can” by Maria Elena Walsh read by our friend Leila.
Immediately we knew that we had to find a way to incorporate all of the people who wanted to tell stories. We contacted Marga, our “Guinea Pig” to try out a diverse set technologies and logistics, and we received our first recorded poem, also by Maria Elena Walsh, “The Sick Donkey”. Afterwards came a story, but not really for children, and so we eventually created a special category for more sophisticated stories, Stories for Thought.
For now, the project has two main pillars (perhaps more in the future): Bringing the gift of a story, and stimulating the pleasure of telling a story. That’s how we got started, and.. away we go!

TE CUENTO
Hace 20 años conocí y colaboré en el Comedor de Doña Eva de la Villa 20 de Lugano, donde asisten diariamente unas 100 familias, y que hoy es manejado por Sandra, su hija. Hablando con Sandra en la cuarentena, me menciona que está preocupadísima porque los chicos de la Villa no están participando de las actividades virtuales. Al no tener computadoras ni tablets, tienen acceso a muy poco: solo lo que se pueda descargar por whatsapp en un celular.
En el Comedor funcionaba el Taller de Cuentos de Ángela, quien todos los miércoles leía durante dos horas a chicos de 2 a 10 años, pero ahora ese espacio está cerrado. Sandra me dice: “20 años después, yo te puedo confirmar que el Taller de Cuentos fue la actividad que les dio las primeras herramientas esenciales. De las 100 familias, reconozco con el paso del tiempo los buenos resultados en aquellos que participaron del Taller, que hoy adultos son los que terminaron el colegio y se formaron como profesionales o tienen trabajos estables”.
Así se nos ocurre empezar a grabar cuentos y mandárselos por whatsapp. Sandra es muy experta en comprometer a la comunidad con la cual trabaja y en lograr que los chicos presten atención y hagan alguna actividad, así que les pide que manden de vuelta un dibujo hecho por ellos de la parte del cuento que más les gustó. Hacemos una prueba piloto con el cuento “La Regadera Misteriosa”, de María Elena Walsh, leído por nuestra amiga Leila.
Como la prueba funciona muy bien, empezamos a contactar a cuanta persona amiga amante de cuentos quisiera participar contribuyendo con una lectura, y ahí pasa algo inesperado, ¡el proyecto desarrolla una segunda pata! Nos enteramos de que muchas personas grandes, que en este momento están más aisladas que los más chicos, antes de la cuarentena tenían la hermosa ocupación de ir a leer cuentos a escuelas o talleres. Inmediatamente sabemos que tenemos que encontrar el modo de sumarlos a nuestros Cuenteros. Contactamos a Marga, nuestra “conejilla de indias”, para hacer las diversas pruebas logísticas y tecnológicas, y recibimos el primer poema grabado, también de María Elena Walsh, “El burro enfermo”. Después viene un cuento, pero ya no para tan chicos, y terminamos sumando una categoría especial de cuentos más complejos, Cuentos para Pensar.
Por ahora, el proyecto tiene dos patas (y quizás sigan surgiendo más y más nuevas): llevar el regalo de un cuento en una dirección y llevar el regalo de contar un cuento en la otra. Así arrancamos y... ¡allá vamos!
